Praying with images

Overview

In order to pray with images or with visual art it is recommended to use the same process as for lectio divina.

This prayer form using visual art is called visio divina (divine seeing).

Instead of Scripture, this form of prayer uses visual elements to help set your mind on prayer. It allows God to speak into your heart through the image.

Prayer Process

  1. Select and Sit with an art work and “read” it slowly.
  2. Ask yourself: What are the first thoughts /emotions /responses that this artwork evokes in me?
  3. What aspects of the artwork do I see/feel on closer/longer examination?
  4. Is there anything that this art work says to me about God or about the great questions of life?
  5. How might this art work have an influence on my world view or my belief system?
  6. Which words describe my reaction to this artwork?
