Environmental justice

Introduction

Put simply, environmental justice is concerned with the right of everybody to clean water and clean air, and the corresponding responsibility to not degrade and destroy the environment. Environmental justice promotes the growth and development of healthy communities.

In terms of more formal definitions, environmental justice has been defined as the pursuit of equal justice and equal protection under the law for all environmental statutes and regulations without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and /or socio-economic status. This concept applies to government actions at all levels, local, state and Commonwealth as well as private industry activities. Providing environmental justice goes beyond the stated definition and includes a guarantee of meaningful community participation with government and industry decision-makers.
