Hail Mary
Prayer
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you;
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Context and"">This prayer is based on two phrases from the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 1:28, 1:42.
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you" comes from the angel’s greeting to Mary at the Annunciation.
"Blessed are you among women..." is Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary at the Visitation.
The petition "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen." was added later and was recorded late in the 15th century. The Hail Mary was included as part of the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) from 1568 to 1955 and was prayed daily by clergy and monks.
